Three Nigerians Arrested in Ghana After Stowing Away on Ship Bound for “Spain”

Three Nigerian nationals are currently in police custody in Ghana after allegedly stowing away on a cargo vessel at the Apapa Wharf in Lagos, believing the ship was headed to Spain.
According to reports, the men secretly boarded the vessel without authorisation, hoping to make their way to Europe in search of better opportunities. However, their journey took an unexpected turn when the ship docked in Ghana instead.
The stowaways were discovered upon the vessel’s arrival and were subsequently handed over to Ghanaian authorities. They are now in police custody as investigations continue into how they managed to board the ship undetected and the circumstances surrounding their attempted illegal migration.
The incident has sparked conversations on social media about the dangers many young Africans face in their desperation to leave the continent, often risking their lives through unsafe and illegal travel routes. Stowing away on ships is extremely dangerous, with risks including suffocation, starvation, dehydration, and severe injuries.
Authorities are expected to collaborate with Nigerian officials as investigations progress, while immigration processes and possible deportation are also being considered.
The case adds to a growing list of risky migration attempts across West Africa, highlighting the urgent need for stronger port security and broader discussions around youth unemployment and migration pressures in the region.
