Mahama Nominates Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as New Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for appointment as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, just weeks after the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The nomination, made under Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, has been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu highlighted Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s extensive judicial career and sterling contributions to Ghana’s legal system.

“Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has, throughout his distinguished judicial career, served with diligence and integrity at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and currently, the Supreme Court,” the statement read.

The Presidency further praised him as a man of intellect and impartiality, noting that his wealth of experience and commitment to justice make him the right candidate for the top judicial position.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, will, if approved, assume full responsibilities as head of the Judiciary at a time when public calls for reforms and improved access to justice are growing louder.

His nomination is expected to spark discussions both within the legal fraternity and the political space, as the Judiciary faces mounting pressure to rebuild public trust.
