PRISONER SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING ANOTHER INMATE

The SAPS has welcomed the successful prosecution and sentencing of a 57-year-old male accused for the rape of a fellow inmate at the Grootvlei Correctional Service.
It was alleged that on 30 January 2024 at about 12:00 midday, the accused, Thabo Samuel also known as 15, approached the 20-year-old victim in the communal toilet area and threatened the victim to undress.
When the victim refused, the suspect assaulted him by grabbing him by the neck, pulling him down, and proceeding to rape him.
The victim immediately reported the traumatic incident to the correctional authorities, which led to a case of rape being opened at the Bloemspruit Police Station.
The investigation was expertly handled by Detective Sergeant Gloria Tsubane from the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Working closely with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), specifically Ms. Coetzee, a watertight case was presented before the court.
The accused, Thabo Samuel (also known as “15”), was found guilty of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The SAPS commends the courage of the victim for reporting the incident, the dedication of Detective Sergeant Tsubane, and the collaborative effort with the NPA that resulted in the successful conviction and life sentence.
This outcome serves as a strong deterrent and reinforces the commitment of law enforcement to pursue justice, even within correctional facilities.
