Nigerian Army Officer Dies After Being Set Ablaze by Wife During Domestic Dispute

A Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has reportedly died after sustaining severe burns when his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic altercation at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Lt. Haruna, who also served as a medical doctor and Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the 6 Battalion, was said to have had a heated argument with his wife, Retyit Obadiah Dalong (Mrs. Samson Haruna), on September 22, 2025. During the dispute, the wife allegedly poured petrol (PMS) on him and set him on fire.

He was initially treated at the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for further medical attention. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the officer succumbed to his injuries.

Lt. Haruna and his wife were married on April 21, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State.
Authorities have since confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and taken into custody, while an investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing.
